The Vitruvian Man represents ideal human body proportions.
The Vitruvian Man (c. 1490) by Leonardo da Vinci is a pen and ink drawing with surrounding notes that has become one of the artist's most famous drawings from the Renaissance period.
It is based on his studies of human proportion, symmetry, and balance, bridging the gap between art and mathematics.
It is accompanied by notes based on the work of the Roman architect Vitruvius.
Leonardo da Vinci's drawing of a male figure perfectly inscribed in a circle and square, known as the "Vitruvian Man," illustrates what he believed to be a divine connection between the human form and the universe. Beloved for its beauty and symbolic power, it is one of the most famous images in the world.
According to Vitruvius' theory the distance from fingertip to fingertip (arm span) should be equal to the distance from head to heel (height).
The man being directly in the center is a glimpse into humanism ideals of a focus on the individual. Da Vinci's choice to leave his depiction nude is a wise one, one that certainly reflects the transition from medieval, modest clothing to a natural state.
